This blog follows the progress of the LRO mission through Integration and Testing at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and launch site processing at KSC\Astrotech. Its purpose is to enable communication to the entire LRO Team about the status of ongoing activities.

LRO was launched June 18th, 2009 at 5:32pm EDT from KSC. This BLOG will follow the progress of the mission as LRO travels to the Moon and establishes orbit around it.

This BLOG will be periodically updated during LRO's early mission but as the nominal mission unfolds the official NASA LRO website and the LRO Science Instrument's own websites will evolve into a more interesting sources of LRO science results as postings appear there first and LRO engineering and operations (source of this site) will become increasingly routine.

Post-Environmental Testing.

We are currently running the CRaTER functional test. This is the first of our post-environmental CPT tests. CPT testing will be performed through the first full week in January. We will run the LROC functional after the completion of the CRaTER testing today.

The next four days will be dedicated to propulsion testing.

We removed the orbiter from the Thermal Vac Chamber on Monday 12/22 and got it back into the cleanroom.

Chamber Door is Open!

Chamber door was opened at 17:40 tonight. Dan Simpson and Sam Floyd currently extracting the Cf-252 source from the chamber. Then Dan will take local area wipes to verify that no radiation has leaked and then we can all start our prep work to escape from the SES.

We are starting to configure for the PDE testing.

TC-204 Orbital Trending complete 9:29pm

We are configuring Spacecraft for ST OGSE Testing
All instruments off
S-band off (going hard line)
SAS and HGA gimbals off

We will be turning the Spacecraft (1553) over to ST OGSE for test and we
will be transitioning slowly at first while testing is ongoing.

After ST OGSE testing is complete we speed up the transitioning and begin the PDE testing.

Going with the trend of the day

TC-211 LROC Collimator Test complete at 7:45pm
We turned LROC off for 15mins to help speed up it cooling.

TC-204 Orbital Trending has started at 7:45pm and will be completed around 9:00pm

ACS Star tracker and PDE investigation should begin somewhere around that time.

The last Balance

At 4:20pm Dec 17 a date that will live in infamy, thermal has called the last and final Balance. At the moment are trying to drive LROC (NAC) to 29 degrees and start TC-211 LROC Collimator Test. That test only takes 10mins but we are still not sure when we will be able to start it. We will do trending after that, trending run for 1.5 hours. Then we will start transitioning to ambient. During transitioning we will be doing some Star tracker and PDE investigation. I'll have a better idea on when we start trending in about an hour. Stay tune

Testing Software Controlled Hraters

This morning, following the DIVINER and LOLA Tests, we have been verifying the instrument software controlled heaters. With the execption of the LEND Heaters, we have verified all of the instrument software controlled heaters (Gosh! That was exciting!).
We are still awaiting the completion of the Hot Soak later today.

We have completed the DIVINER Functional and a LOLA CPT. We are currently running heater control tests while we wait for Hot Soak to finish (sometime late this afternoon). There isa plan to run a star tracker test during this shift. At the end of Hot Soak, we will run the orbiter Trending.

Currently running DIVINER functional, TC-206, which will be followed by Orbiter Trending, TC-204, while in the background, the thermal team works toward Hot Soak completion and some additional balance data on the Solar Arrray gimbals. The thermal activities will most likely take most of the shift.

Moving on, or just around again?

TC-200, Mission Rehearsal #1, completed at 7:00 pm tonight when the MOC turned control of the Orbiter back over to I&T. (It took a couple extra hours to dump all the spacecraft data to the ground.)

At 7:10 pm, we began the inserted testing to perform the MCC and LOI burns. These were completed at 9:40 pm.

TC-201, the Simulation Cleanup, was executed from 9:41 – 10:12 pm.

TC-202, another Payload Integrated Functional, promptly started at 10:37 pm (and should run till about 5:40 am on 12/17).

As Fate Would Have It…

The Mission Rehearsal has run into a snag. At ~4:10 pm Action Point 30, Observing Sun Position Error, tripped causing the orbiter to go into sun safe. This has brought the simulation to it’s knees and will thus be terminating early.

At current time, we are performing some cleanup activities to close out the simulation steps (TC-198 and TC-200). We will then move into the inserted test for the PDE MCC & LOI burns.


TC-202, the Payload Integrated Functional, might commence as early as 8:00 pm tonight due to our unexpected schedule modification.

The mission Rehearsal #1 continues to go smoothly

As of 12/16/2008, 1:40 PM the Mission Rehearsal #1 continues, we are in pass #20. There are 4 passes remaining. The time remaining is 8.5 hours. That puts completion at around 9:30 PM tonight, 12/16/2008.

Following Mission Rehearsal, will be the Rehearsal cleanup, TC-201,(1 hour), followed by the Payload Functional Test, TC-202 (7 hours), and the LROC Collimator Test, TC-203 (0.5 hours)

MR1 Update 12/16/08 @ 7:30 am ET

MR1 is ongoing (TC-198).

We completed Pass 16 from the Station Schedule Table.
Pass 16 Completion 12/16/08 @ ~7:00 am ET. -> Final Pass (24) Completion prediction 12/16/08 @ ~9:00 pm ET

Other Notable Updates:
1) We completed the 4hr balance for the SAS Gimbal for 4.3A per segment, and subsequently set the SAS current to 3.8A per segment on 12/16/08 @ ~2:30 a.m ET

2) Started Orbit Simulation on 12/16/08 @ ~2:40 a.m. ET

3) It is anticipated by Thermal that we will declare the 24 hr Hot Soak #4 mid afternoon.

Back to Thermal Updates in a World of Simulation

The Mission Rehearsal is still going.

The SAS achieved it’s thermal balance point ~10:30 pm and requires a four hour soak. Once it’s soak is completed we will back down on the SAS current and continue the orbiter transition to Hot Soak #4.

Looking Ahead Through the Blades of Grass

Mission Rehearsal #1 is a tricky one. It transcends two, yes two, steps in the schedule.

Step 198 is the start which runs for 24 hours. Then step 199 is only a time to declare Hot Soak #4 without utilizing any time at all since it is an instantaneous event. However, we then have step 200 which is nothing more than a 12 hour continuation of Mission Rehearsal #1.

Thus Mission Rehearsal #1 will actually claim 36 hours of our lives and not just 24. The simulation will complete ~8:40 pm tomorrow night (Tuesday 12/16).

Following the rehearsal there are the cleanup activities (TC-201) and a desire to retest a simulated MCC (this will not require a configuration change of the spacecraft as the desire is to only see the burn). These activities should take about 2 hours.

Next on the schedule will be TC-202, the Payload Integrated Functional, which should begin around 11:00 pm on 12/16 and run for it’s usual 7 hours.

Mission Rehearsal #1, TC-198, is underway

After some configuration problems and a couple of false starts, we managed to actually get into Mission Rehearsal #1, TC-198, around 8:45 AM this morning (12/15/2008). As of 10:40 AM, the rehearsal is going smoothly. The rehearsal will run for the next 24 hours.

This should be a great time for my learned colleagues, on the LRO team to post their innermost thoughts the meaning of life and why guitars have 6 or 12 strings, while a banjo has only 5.

We are continuing to make progress in the pre-simulation preparation for the Mission Rehearsal. These activities are wrapped up into TC-198, although we haven't officially started the MR. We are working our way through some GDS time syncing and epoch state vector issues.

Once we kick off the MR, it is expected to take 24 hrs.

Notable changes to the MR1 SER:

Step 37 of Pre-Simulation Preparation: delete the text that is there, and replace with, "I&T TC should start gssas_fixcurrall(4.3) to set the SAS current to 4.3 A per segment."
After step 39, insert "After balance of the SAS gimbal is achieved, as declared by the thermal engineer, the I&T TC should start gssas_fixcurrall(3.8) to set the SAS current to 3.8 A per segment, then start the SAS Background Cycling Procedure with time coordinated with the MOC
a. PAGE GS_SAS_ORBIT_SIM
b. Enter 48 minutes for eclipse duration"

The other balance that needs to be achieved during this transition is the LOLA hot-operational balance. For this balance point, we need the LOLA laser firing. We plan to submit an Operations Activity Request to the MOC during the simulation to achieve this configuration change and exercise the MOT a bit. We do not want to start out immediately with the laser firing, in order to save shots.

Upcoming Plan

The near term plan for operations is to set the SAS rack to 4.33 A and transition the chamber to hot thermal balance. In the morning we will also enable the LOLA laser for its balance. We will stay in this configuration until LOLA and SAS balance (12 hours). We will then transition the power down to 3.8 A and start orbit cycling SAS for a power balance. Then we will warm the ITP, PROP, CRaTER, and LEND to soak and leave the +Y IM panels and +Z panels at balance. This will take 8-10 hours. After the rehearsal is complete, we will do the payload functional once CRaTER, LEND, and ITP reach soak.

Note Trick is allowing me to utter decimate the current plan in order to achieve 2 more balance points.

Functional Status?

Despite some minor issues due to an ITOS crash, the functional is progressing smoothly. We have completed the LOI sections and are now in Comm 4, Commission of the Ka-Band Telemetry.

The Orbiter Functional has begun.

Terminated the LROC B/G Imaging at 11:52 pm which was started in TC-189 at 9:30 pm.

Completed TC-190, LROC Collimator Test, from 11:53 pm – 12:06 am.
Completed TC-191, Dump SSR Recorder, from 12:07 am – 1:15 am.

Started TC-193, Orbiter Functional, at 1:17 am.

The functional is estimated to take about 18 hours which would place its completion time around 7 pm tonight. Following this is the Orbiter Trending, TC-193, which takes approximately 1 hour. This being said, if all goes well, we should be able to start transitioning HOT around 8 pm or so tonight.

The Payload Combined Functional Test, TC-186 will be complete by 9:30 PM

The Payload Combined Functional Test, TC-186, which started at 2:15 PM today will be complete by 9:30 PM. At which time we will re-configure for and collect the LROC images, TC-187 through TC-190. We will then dump the SSR, TC-191. These tasks should take us until 11:00 PM. At that point we will perform, TC-192, Reconfigure for the Orbiter Functional Test. The Orbiter Functional Test, TC-193, should start between 11:30 PM, tonight, 12/14/2008 and midnight.

TC-180, DLRE Field of Regard Thermal Mapping, which runs in parallel with other activities, was started at 12:45 am.
TC-181 and TC-182, LROC B/G Imaging, procedures were started at 12:52 am will continue to run in the background.

At 12:55 am, the RW Torque Override Commanded was sent to command all the torques to zero. This was done at the request of thermal to help cool down the spacecraft a little faster.

And we continue on our path to Cold Soak #4. The Orbiter should be in cold soak conditions just in time for brunch.

My magic eight ball is also telling me that the Payload Functional, TC-186, will be executed later today around 3:00 pm.

MOC Procedure Testing will end around 11:00 PM

The MOC procedure Test, TC-178, will continue until 11:00 PM (+/-) a few minutes. Then we will configure the instruments per TC-179 and start the DIVINER Thermal Mapping, TC-180, and LROC imaging TC-182,& 183 (both in the background), while the Mini-RF, TC-182 tests will take center stage.

MOC MRF and MOC again

We ran MOC procedures (TC-178) from 4:00-5:15PM. The Mini-RF dual bore temperatures fell to 18C and we ran the MRF Calibration (TC-181) from 5:15-7:00PM.

We have turned commanding back over to the MOC to continue TC-178. We think that it will run another few hours before we will turn on some instruments (TC-179) including LAMP, CRaTER, Diviner and LOLA.

TC-177: Going Cold

We completed TC-174: the DSB Memory Test at 1:38p.

Started going cold around 2pm. Hope to get to cold soak sometime tomorrow night. Anywhere between 9p-2a.

We have powered on LROC so the MOC can run the background images while they check out more flight procedures. We transferred commanding to the MOC at 3p.

When MRF gets to 18deg C, we will pause the MOC activities to run the MRF calibration, TC-181.

The payload functional was completed at 7:40am this morning. We began the orbiter trending proc about 7:45am.

Status Update at the Wee Hour of 1:30am on 12/12/08

The S-Band Functional (TC-164) which was started at 5:00pm was completed at 11:40pm on 12/11.

Following this we took a little break to clean up some sockets to the instrument sites, go over some STOL procedures, and await the full complement of instrumenter’s to be present.

At 12:40am, we started the Payload Integrated Functional (TC-162). This Functional is expected to take at least 7 hours which should put the completion time around first shift.

TC-164 S-Band Functional Test Continues

As of 11:00 PM on 12/11/2008, we are still running the S-Band Functional Test. TC-164. This test started at 5:00 PM this evening and is scheduled to take 8 hours. We expect to be finished with this test around 1:00 AM tomorrow morning 12/12/2008. Following the S-Band Functional, we will run the Payload Combined Functional Test, here again the test takes about 8 hours. So the entire overnight shift will be devoted to the Payload Functional Test. This test will be followed, tomorrow morning, by dumping the SSR and performing the C&DH DSB test.

TC-164 in process

We are currently performing the S-band Functional Test (TC-164), which is expected to take til sometime around midnight. The Payload Integrated Functional (TC-162) will follow.

Ka-Band Functional test Complete at 3:30 PM

We have completed the Ka-Band functional Test, TC-166, at 3:30 PM today. We are now proeparing for the S-Band functional Test, TC-164. This is an 6 hour test. Following the S-Band Test; at approx. 12:00 AM (midnight)or 00:00 AM 12/12/2008, we will run the Payload Combined Functional Test.

Hot Soak reached at 12:15pm

Now all we have to do is finish the Ka functional (2 more hrs), run the S-band functional (6hrs), the Payload Integrated Functional (7hrs), Orbiter Trending (2hrs), and the DSB test (5hrs).

Starting Ka Functional test @ 8:30am

The ITP is at Hot Soak temperature now, so we are going to start running the Ka functional. It will take about 8 hours to complete. Charles thinks the rest of the orbiter should be at hot soak in about 3 hours.

Transition to Hot Soak ongoing

We have successfully executed the spacecraft configuration for hot soak (TC-160). Things are heating up on the spacecraft. Once we reach hot soak temperatures, we will continue on with the S-band and Ka-band functionals (TC-164 and TC-166 respectively).

Hot operational balance achieved

Hot operational balance was declared at 4:00AM.
We've had a great time running LROC images in the background, the foreground, etc.
At around 8:00AM, we will begin TC-159 transition to hot soak.

Run the MRF Hot Soak tests TC-167 thru TC-170.

We are waiting for the SAS to get to hot op balance. Hopefully it will be there when we finish the MRF testing.

After SAS is at balance, drive the ITP to Hot Soak temps.

Once ITP is at Hot Soak temps, run Ka functional (8hr) and then the S-band functional (6 hrs)

In parallel, we are waiting for LEND to get to Hot op balance, maybe around midnight?

Once LEND gets to balance, we will configure the chamber for Hot Soak.

Once LEND gets to hot soak, we can run the instrument testing.

You will note I put no times on anything. ;-) At the bottom of the blog is the updated schedule.

OK, as we sit here waiting on our thermal conditions to be just right, we have diverged from the timeline ever so just slightly.

TC-167, Stop LROC Background Imaging, was started at 1:54pm (to terminate TC-155) and was completed at 2:00pm.
TC-168, Mini-RF Calibration Activity, was started at 2:00pm and is expected to run for ~1.5 hours.

TVAC Status Update on 12/10 @ High Noon

TC-153, The Start of SAS Orbit Cycling, was started at 7:28am and continues to run in the background. (The step was completed at 8:00am.)
TC-154, Mini-RF Calibration Activity, was punted by the Mini-RF team.
TC-155, LROC B/G Imaging – WAC / NAC, was started at 8:23am and is still running in the background.


TC-157, Mini-RF Calibration Activity, should begin ~2:00pm… if the paperwork is ready?

Cold Operational Balance, TC-147, is Complete

AS of 10:45 PM, 12/9/2008, the thermal team has declared that the Cold Operational Balance (TC-148) is complete. We are starting the transition to Hot Balance, TC-149, in parallel with the transition, we will perform the Mini RF Calibration, TC-150. The Mini RF team wants to perform their test with the instrument at +5 degrees C, so we will delay starting the test until the instrument is closer to that temparature. Following the Mini RF test we can proceed to the mission simulation #30, TC-151; somewhere around 1:00 AM tomorrow morning 12/10/2008

Cold Operational Balance has been achieved

Cold Operational Balance has been achieved. The thermal team is planning on reviewing the situation after a 2 hour soak. At that point they will determine if we can move on or if we need to maintain the balance case for the full 4 hours. Stay turned for an update around 10:45 PM.

Transition to Cold Ops. Balance is going slower than expected

The transition to Cold Operational Balance is taking longer than expected. It is now 8:45 PM, and we still have not achieved thermal Balance. The thermal team thinks that we may achieve thermal balance in about an hour. From that point we officially need to sit at balance for 4 hours before moving on. The thermal team will review the data and determine if it is possible to shorten the soak. But for now, we are looking at as a minimum a 2 hour soak and most likely a 3-4 hour soak. This means that the test scheduled to follow the soak will be pushed past midnight The transition to Hot Balance will not start before midnight ( most likely 1:00 AMon 12/10/2008); this test (TC-149) takes 1.5 hours and it is followed by the Mini-RF Calibration (TC-150). Having said all of this, it appears that the mission simulation # 30 (TC-151) will probably not start before 2:00 AM tomorrow 12/10/2008

As soon as we configure for transition we will begin Sim #30. There is a plan to move the MRF calibration to before the transition configuration. Sorry for the confusion.

Revision to the last entry

We are currently performing the TC-107 Transition to Cold Soak #3. this will take about 2 hours so. So we can move into Orbiter Trending (TC-108)by 5:30 PM

Cold Svrvival Survival Balance (TC-105) is Complete!!!

The thermal team has reviewed their data and decided that we have successfully completed the requirements for the Cold Survival Balance (TC-105). Survival Balance was declared over at 2:30 PM today, 12/8/2008.
We are now configuring for the Cold Soak Balance #3 (TC-106). This process will take about an hour after which we will continue with the transisition to Cold Soak (TC-107). This transistion should take about 4-5 hours.
When we reach soak temperature, (estimated to be 7:30-8:00 PM) we can perform the Orbiter Trending Test and the LROC Collimator Test, And LROC b/G Imaging Test. (TC-108, 109,& 110); (estimated elaspsed time is 2 hours). Following these tests we will run the LOLA tests.

Blame it on Charles

The Gods in their infinite wisdom. Have rescinded their proclamation of Thermal Balance. As of 0745 balance has not been archived. Charles would like Lend's internal temp to be the benchmark for balance. ETA for balance and I quote Thermal "a long time"

We met the 24 hour requirement for pressure stabilization at 7:45 p.m. We are currently in TC-104 waiting for Thermal to declare Cold Survival Balance. Anticipated completion time for TC-104 is additional 6 to 7 hours. Then we move to TC-105, Cold survival Balance which will be another 4 hours wait. Thermal best guess is; it will be sometimes during morning shift before we complete TC-105 and begin transition to Cold Soak #3.

FSW Memory Upload Complete (TC-101)

TC-101, Memory upload is complete. We are moving on to the C&DH DSB Test.(TC-102) This test takes about 4 hours. At that point we will have been at hard vacuum (less than 10-5 torr) for over 24 hours, so we can drop through the 24 hour hold for pressure stablization (TC-103), and go directly into Preparation for Cold Balance (TC-104), which takes 6 hours.

DIVINER Test and instrument Data completed

As of 9:54 AM today 12/7/2008, we have completed the DIVINER Thermal Mapping Test (TC-100) and we have dumped the memory to recover the instrument data for the DIVINER, NAC and WAC.

The instruments have been turned off in prepration for the memory upload, (TC-101)

We are planning on moving to the Flight software update (TC-101). We need to see if we can get the software folks in early so we can start the s/w upload, right now they are scheduled in here @11:00 AM

12/7/08 A New Day

Due to the issue with the SAS rack (PRB-734) today's plan is roughly 8 hours behind our original schedule.

DLRE Portrait (TC-100) will complete around 11:30AM.
Load FSW kernel (TC-101) will start around 11:30AM and maybe finish by 1:00PM.
DSB Memory Test (TC-102) will start around 1:00PM and maybe finish around 5:00PM.

Wait for 24 hours for pressure (TC-103) is a placeholder for waiting until 12/7/08 7:44PM EDT. The chamber reached 1E-5 Torr on 12/6/08 at 7:44PM. The chamber must be at 1E-5 Torr for 24-hours before any high voltage can be turned on. We can't proceed to TC-104 before 24-hours has elapsed. So TC-103 is going to be either short or long depending upon how the rest of the day goes.

With any luck we will finish TC-102 before the 24-hour mark, and we'll be back on schedule. The waiting time of TC-103 will just be shorter than originally planned.

Back in Black

We have successfully tested the "emergency power-down GSE to power the HGAS heaters" configuration. It works great.

We also made the quickest possible entry into the white room to fetch the soldering iron etc. to repair the SAS rack. A connector had decided that today would be a good day to wear out. We bypassed the offending connector and soldered the wire to the board. We've re-powered the spacecraft and the SAS rack works great.

We will now begin to cool the shrouds rerun the transition (TC-99) and when appropriate we'll begin DLRE field of regard thermal mapping test (TC-100), expected to take until about about 6.5 to 7 hours.

That means that the FSW load (TC-101) will be no earlier than 10:00AM, sleep in.
That also means that the DSB Memory Test (TC-102) will be no earlier than Noon. sleep in and have a big breakfast.

Loose connection.

Traced the problem to a loose pin in one of the connectors in the rack. We are working on a remedy.

12:00am Delays.

One of the power supplies on the SAS rack is not working. We are warming up the test enclosure so we can power down the spacecraft so we can look at the SAS rack. Tom believes a diode in the rack is blown and needs to test it. We are also going to use the external power supply to power the HGAS heaters.

After we check it out, we will resume with the Diviner mapping. This is delaying the FSW kernel upload and DSB testing. I'm sure it won't start until the morning. Stay tuned.

The scan will start around 9:30pm. We are waiting for the test panel to get colder.
FSW kernel load should start around 4:30am. DSB testing should start around 7am.

Bob to the rescue. We had some problems with people getting here because of the snow. (Yes, I know its not sticking.) We had to call on Bob I. to come bail us out.

My guess is we will start with TC-100, DLRE Mapping activity around 8:30pm. That means that the FSW Kernel load should happen around 3am and the DSB test should start around 5:30am.

TV Chamber Pumpdown Has Started!

The LEND Functional test is complete and the Orbiter is powered down. (TC-95 & TC-96)

The thermal vacuum chamber operations personnel started the pumpdown at 12:53 PM. (TC-97) The estimated time for pumpdown to hard vacuum(10-5 torr), is 5-6 hours.

When we reach hard vacuum, we will power up the Orbiter and configure for Transition to Thermal Balance #3. (TC-98)

At7:10 AM today, 12/06/2008, we began the Orbiter Trend up test, TC-92. This will be followed by the LROC Collimator Test, TC-93. We anticipate installing the Californium radioative source at 11:00 AM and then closing the door for chamber pumpdown.

After closing the door, we will run the LEND functional (with source), then power down the orbiter for the initial stage uf chamber pump down. the orbiter will remain off until the cha,ber pressure reaches 10-5 torr or less.

Could start back fill @6:30am 11/25

Charles predicts we could start to backfill the chamber by 6:30am. After about an hour, we should be at 200 torr, and ready to re-establish the external purge (7:30am).

What next?

After we have recovered from the sim, thermal will tell the facility folks to bring the shroud to ambient. It should take about 2 hours or so to get the shroud to above 0 deg. Once the shroud reaches zero, we can power down the spacecraft. All console support, except thermal is excused.

It should take about 9-12 hours to get the chamber to the point where we can open the door. So door opening could happen around 2p-5p on 11/25. We will try to get the source out and start panel removal if we have time.

We will have an 8am on Wed.

Sim 17 started at 2140. SIM 17 will be approximately 5 hours in duration . At 3.5 hous into the SIM The Insertion Burn will be preformed.

SIM 27 Complete

Sim 27 completed at 19:40. At this time we are configuring for SIM 17 which will simulate LOI-1 Maneuver and perform early mission activities.

Sim-27 started at ~1400 and is scheduled to run for 6 hours. GDS had a problem with the RW‘s and the current problem is the timing between GDS writes and FSW reads. The current problem as of this writing is not a show stopper. The timing is being tweaked as the simulation moves forward.

Full Speed Ahead

The LOLA Functional (TC-130) was completed at 12:34pm. And from there we moved into the LOLA CPT’s (slightly out of order from the suggest handout).
LOLA CPT #1 (TC-135) started at 12:44pm and was completed at 1:40pm.
LOLA CPT #2 (TC-136) started at 1:41pm and was completed at 1:54pm.
LOLA CPT #3 (TC-137) started at 1:55pm and was completed at 2:11pm.
LOLA CPT #4 (TC-138) started at 2:11pm and was completed at 2:35pm.

Mid Day Update on a Beautiful Sunday Afternoon

The Orbiter Trending (TC-82) which was started at 7:10am wrapped up at 8:45am.

In anticipation of instrument testing, the LEND instrument was then turned on and configured from 9:00 to 9:10am. This was immediately followed without delay by configuring the LOLA instrument to begin firing it’s laser.

After a cup of coffee and a little warm up time, we began the LEND Functional (TC-80) at 10:10am. This functional was completed at 11:40am followed by retrieval of the data for the instrument team.

Now it is time for the LOLA show. We have just started the LOLA Functional (TC-130) at 11:52am and this is expected to run for about an hour. Following this is then about 8 hours or so of LOLA and LR CPT’s.

TC-79: CRaTER Functional

We finished the RWA spin down test at 11 pm. We paused the CRaTER functional to wait for the spin down test to finish. Now we can start the CRaTER Coincidence Mask proc which takes 6-8hrs.

Dumped the SSR at 10:50pm.

Change of plans: After the CRaTER Coincidence Mask proc is done, we will run the Orbiter Trending proc before the LEND functional. We think the CRaTER proc will end a few hours earlier than advertised so this will put the start of the LEND test somewhere between 7a-9a on Sunday morning.

Still on track for Sim 27 & 17 to start Monday morning at 8am.

TC-77 & 76: CRaTER Functional & RWA Spin Down

We have completed the RWA spin down test in the positive direction and have finished the spin up in the negative direction. Right now the RWAs are spinning down. Started the RWA test at 5:00pm.

While we wait for the spin down to finish, we started the CRaTER functional at 8:44pm.

TC-72: Payload Functional Complete @ 4:45pm

To recap, the Payload Functional ran from 9:50a-4:45 pm. We ran TC-73, 74, & 75 before the Payload Functional.

Not going to run the CSS Functional at this time. Forgot we need the loop backs in so we need to configure for it during the break.

Next up: We will run the RWA spin down test, take more LROC background images, then go into the CRaTER functional.

A little status update to enjoy with your morning coffee

The LROC Background Imaging Test (TC-75) was completed at 8:00am.

Following this, LEND was a little warm, so the team entered standby mode while giving a little time for LEND and for other instrument support to arrive for the Payload Integrated Functional (TC-72).

Following the wait, the Payload Integrated Functional (TC-72) started promptly at 9:51am.

This functional is scheduled to take about 7 hours at which time the RW Spin Down Test (TC-76) and then the CRaTER Functional (TC-79) are next on the docket.

Hot Soak #2 declared at 6:00AM Saturday

Hot Soak #2 was declared at 6AM. We have performed TC-71 (termination).
TC-72 (Payload integrated functional) is scheduled for sometime after 8AM to ensure that the instrument teams are on console.

We completed TC-73 (LROC Collimator) and TC-74 (LROC Functional). We started TC-75 (LROC Background Imaging) and in parallel are starting TC-77 (CSS Functional).

Transition from cold to hot

We have completed the MOC testing (TC-68) around midnight. We completed a Mini-RF calibration run. We have a few hours before we reach hot soak temperatures.

We continue to run orbit cycling (TC-61) and have started WAC background(TC-69) and NAC background(TC-70) while awaiting hot soak to be declared.

Once we reach hot soak we'll run TC-73, 74, 75 etc. We won't run TC-72 (Integrated Payload Functional) until 1st shift, to allow instrument support personnel to be on console.

MOC procedure checkout underway

Prior to turning the Orbiter over to the MOC crew we completed the RWA run down test, the FSW Controlled Heater Test, and stopped the LROC Imaging activity.
At 8:00 PM today, we turned the Orbiter over to the Mission Operations Center (MOC) to allow them to dry run and checkout some of the flight operations procedures. The MOC Crew has been given a 4hour slot ending at midnight, at which time we will resume LROC imaging tests.

Plan for Hot Soak #2.

The plan for Hot Soak is to run all the tests originally planned but before the DSB test, we are going to insert the LOLA/LR CPTs and the LAMP Functional.

This will extend Hot Soak so we can try to get to Sim 27 & 17 by 8am on Monday (11/24) and hopefully shorten Hot Soak #3.

Currently, we are still running TC-66 RWA Spin Down Test.

Status 11/21 @1:15pm

TC-59: Cold Soak was completed by 8am.
TC-62: Orbiter Trending was run from 9am to 10:50am.
TC-65: FSW Controlled Heater Functional was run from 11am-1p.
TC-66: RWA Spin Down Test started at 1p.

Changes to the plan:
Keep running the LROC B/G Images until 8pm.
Stop LROC B/G Images (TC-67)
Start TC-68, MOC Flight Procedure Checkout from 8p-12a.
Restart LROC B/G Images at 12a and run until we reach Hot Soak.

About Sim 27 & 17, we are going to try and time it so we start the sim at 8am on Monday 11/24.

TC-54 complete

TC-54 (Mini-RF calibration) has been completed. The next two steps TC-55 and TC-56 (collectively referred to as the Mini-RF CPT) have begun.

We have completed most of TC-58 (Propulsion Catbed Test) except for adjusting the battery voltage down to 32V.

We are still expecting to be done all Cold Soak activities by 8AM.

TC-52 and 53 completed

TC-52 (trending) and TC-53 (Ka-band OFF) have been completed around 1:45. We have begun TC-54 the MRF calibration, which rolls right into TC-55, 56, 57, and 59.

Hopefully, by morning all testing slated for cold soak #2 will be completed, and we'll begin the transition to hot soak #2.

More Predictions…

The LEND Functional (TC-45) has just completed ahead of schedule and the anticipated LROC testing is temporarily on hold awaiting thermal conditions to just be right. The thermal team believes that this might take up to two hours?

Following this is some SSR management and the Orbiter Trending (TC-52).

The Mini-RF Calibration Activity (TC-54) is expected to commence around midnight once the battery is up to 33.6 and instrument support will be on hand.

Status Update

We have completed the CRaTER Functional (TC-47) and have commanded the battery to 33.6 volts in preparation for the Mini-RF testing later tonight.

We have also just begun the LEND Functional (TC-45) which is estimated to take 4 hours which will put us around 10:30pm tonight.

Status 11/20 @2:20p

We are still running the CRaTER functional. Started at 9am so we should be done around 9pm.

We've switched up the order some.
TC-49 Prop Catbed Heater Test has been completed. It was run in parallel with the CRaTER functional.

After TC-47, the CRaTER functional, we will run TC-44 (LROC Background Imaging); TC-45 (LEND functional); TC-48 (LROC Collimator test); TC-50 (Stop LROC B/G Imaging); and then we should be back on track.

We are going to TC-58 (Prop Catbed Heater Test @high voltage) @ 12 midnight. It can be run in parallel with whatever we're doing.

TC-38 Payload Functional completed at around 2:45A this morning. TC-39 LROC collimator was completed as well and TC-40 LROC Functional(at soak temperature this time)was started. We'll soon roll into TC-42.

Hoepfully, TC-43 RW spin-down, and TC-44 LROC B/G imaging will be started within a few hours.

Projecting activities into Thursday first shift, Payload has requested that the order of TC-45, 46, and 47 be changed to run like this:

TC-47 CRaTER functional (12 hours)
TC-46 LROC collimator (<1 hour)
TC-45 LEND functional (4 hours)

Déjà vu?

The Payload Integrated Functional (TC-38) was started at ~7pm and should be completed around 2am.

Following this, there is a question as to whether or not we were cold enough earlier today when LROC testing (TC-39 and TC-40) was completed. Thus it looks like we might be running these two tests again.

TC-35 is complete, TC-36 underway

We have completed TC-35, a series of LROC images with and without decon heater on. We are executing TC-36, which will complete when thermal declares that the spacecraft has reached cold soak. Estimates are we'll achieve cold soak sometime during first shift Wednesday.

Status 11/18 @9:30pm

We've finished Orbiter Trending (TC-34) about 9:10pm. We powered off the Ka system because it was keeping the ITP from getting cold. We also set the RWA speed down to 30.

According to thermal, we have at least eight hours to get to soak not including LEND.

Status 11/18 @7:00 pm

We finished the sim around 6pm and are currently in TC-33 Simulation Cleanup. We should be able to start the Orbiter Trending proc shortly.

After Orbiter Trending, we will run a few LROC procs and wait for cold soak. Cold soak is somewhere between 9 to 14 hours away.

LRO SIM # 18 Successfully Completed!

SIM #18 (TC-32) concluded at about 6pm today. Overall it was very successful. As was its purpose a number of changes and improvements to the set-up procedures and the flight RTSs and the ATS were identified and captured in SOARS. Congratulations and thanks to all who made the simulation a success. We are now headed to Cold Soak with TC-33 thru TC-37 being executed during the transition.

TC-32: Mission Sim #18

As of 5:25pm, we are nearing the end of Mission Sim 18.
Current estimate from thermal, is that we are 10-15 hrs away from cold soak.

Going Cold, and going, and going, and ...

Currently the orbiter is transitioning to Cold Soak #2 and at this time it is being estimated that it will take another 15 to 20 hours to achieve this goal.

LRO SIM # 18 (Nominal Monthly Station Keeping) Starting Up

The Orbiter is being controlled from the MOC and the ATS is being uploaded. For reference the SIM #18 Test Script is in 451-SER-002738 and the actual ATS load is SC_2009187_0038_A_VO2 (which folks in Overflow can obtain from Oscar in ACS). ATS load will take approximately another 45 minutes and the entire SIM is about 10 hours long.

TC-30 completed

TC-30 Orbiter Stress Test completed around 5:50AM. Currently configuring for Mission Sim #18. Should be in place and ready to go before 7:00AM.

3:30AM ET - Middle of System Stress Test (TC-30)

We started TC-30 (System Stress Test Functional) at about 2:15AM. This is a four-hour test. By about 6:30, we plan to be rolling into TC-31 (Reconfigure Orbiter for Sim), which takes about an hour. Mission Sim #18 would begin no earlier than 7:30AM, ET.

As of 12mid in TC-27 Orbiter Trending.

This is all speculation, mind you, but I think we should be done around 12:30-12:45am with the orbiter functional. Then we have to configure for the cold transition and run the Orbiter Stress test (4 hrs).

That would take us to about 5:30am to begin configuration for the sim and 6:30am for the start of the sim.

Started TC-27 Orbiter Trending @10pm

We started trending around 10pm. We are starting the cold transition now (11pm).

I'm estimating a 3:30am start of TC-31 which configures the orbiter for the sim. Looks like the sim (TC-32) should start around 4:30am

TC-25: Payload Functional Complete @9:00pm

We have completed TC-25 the Payload Functional. We are going to take a few more LROC images and synch the orbiter time. After that, we will begin orbiter trending. MRF is powered down.

Time for Mission Sim #18 still good for 3am but check back before you leave the house!

TC-25: Payload Functional about half way through.

Payload integrated functional is proceeding well. We're about half way through now. We have already run the LROC collimator test (TC-26) prior to the functional. After the payload functional, we will run orbiter trending (TC-27) which takes a little over an hour. We will start transition to cold after trending. Once we get into configuration, we will run a 4 hr system stress test. After that we get ready for Mission Sim #18 (TC-32). Could be ready as early as 3am to run the sim.

Sim support personnel should be on console by 3am. - Sorry!

Payload Integrated Functional has Begun...

At this time, we have completed the LROC Collimator Test (TC-26) and we have just started the greatly anticipated Payload Integrated Functional (TC-25) which is expected to take about 7 hours.

This also means that the expected start time for Mission Simulation #18 (TC-32) will be around 1:00am tonight.

Updated Current Prediction

As it would seem, the instruments dropped out of hot soak since they were powered down. This means that the Payload Integrated Functional (TC-25) will be delayed. (Hopefully we can start this within an hour or so from now?)

Meanwhile we are inserting a quick Mini-RF test.


Once we start the Payload Integrated Functional, we can re-estimate the start time for the Mission Simulation #18. (However, at this tie it would seem that it will be delayed by maybe 3 hours and start closer to midnight.)

Current Prediction

At current time the fun filled activities of the Orbiter Functional (TC-23) and cleanup activities (TC-24) are coming to an end.

The Payload Integrated Functional (TC-25) will be starting around 9 to 9:30 and is expected to take 7 hours.


It is also expected at this time that Mission Simulation #18 (TC-32) should begin around 9:30pm tonight.

We are currently performing lro_comm_03.proc of the Orbiter Functional

Going by the timeline, we have completed 10 hours of the 20 hour long Orbiter Functional Test. At this rate, we will not complete the orbiter Functional Test before 6:00 AM tomorrow morning.

We completed the LOI burn. Going onto lro_loi_03.

TC-23: Finished lro_cruise_05 @14:35pm

We are skipping lro_cruise_06 and _07 because CRaTER and LEND are already powered. We are starting lro_loi_01 which configures the GDS for the cruise sim.

LRO moves into TC-19; Configure for Hot Start

We have finished up the recovery from the Barker command Test. We have moved on through TC-17 and 18,. we are now in TC-19, Configuring for Hot Start. Hot start will occur in aboout an hour; approx. 10:50 PM. This will allow us to move into Hot Soak #1 and start configuring for the Orbiter Functional Test. It looks like the Orbiter Functional Test, TC-23, will start arount 1:30 AM Tomorrow morning 11/16/2008 The Orbiter functional Test runs for about 18 hours.

TC-15 Barker Command Test completed

At 8:15PM, this evening, the C&DH reset as per the Barker Command Test, TC-15. We started the recovery process and it has taken a little longet thaen was expected. Mostly minor porblems that were handeled in a reasonably efficient manner, but it still has taken longer then expected.

We are not yet ready to move on to TC-18 Hot Transition Complete or orbiter hot start, TC-19.

We are about an hour behind our predicted schedule

TC-15 Part 1 Successful

Part 1 on the command barker test was successful. After 24 hours with no ground commands, the spacecraft ran RTS 61 which resets the comm system. Now we are waiting for the 26 hour timer to go off.

TC-15 Barker Test Update

We are well into TC-15 (Barker Command Test). We expect to continue this test until 8:00 PM 11/15/2008.

At 5 a.m. this morning we surpassed a yellow limit on the SAS Gimbal Cable wraps and were forced to dial down the current supplied by the SAS to 4.6A from 5A.

TC-15 (Barker Test) started

1E-5 Torr reached at around 4:10PM. By the time that we finished TC-14 setup, killed the RF rack, tweaked the battery voltage, and then recovered, it was 6:18PM or 08-318-23:17:52 GMT. The Barker test is actually 93600 seconds (26 hours) without command, so the anticipated end is 8:18PM Saturday.

Our plan is to run the 28 hour Barker Command Test (TC-15), unless..........

Our Plan is to start running the 28 hour Barket Command Test, (TC-15), as of 5:00 PM this evening. This means that there will be no commands sent to the Orbiter until 8:00 PM tomorrow, 11/15/2008, unless we run into thermal problems with the Orbiter configuration. If this happens and we have to send some commands to the orbiter, the 28 hour silence period must be restarted, in which case we may elect to halt the Barker Command Test(with the intent of re-running it later), and move on to the Orbiter Hot Soak Tests.

Status - 11/14/08 @4:55am

LOLA/LR testing was completed at approximately 2am this morning. The orbiter was powered down around 3am in preparation for starting the launch day procedure at 5am.

Launch Day proc starting at 05:00 is still GO

Since last update:

*Mini-RF calibration test completed
*Subset of the GN&C FSW Functional was run (I believe DI and AC)
*LOLA/LR BCE/setup testing per TC-04 currently in progress and going well

Systems call that after LOLA/LR testing completes, the time remaining until the 05:00 start of the Launch Day proc could be better spent on some GDS followup work rather than launching the Payload Functional to confirm the LOLA BCE config, so we decided to passify (to coin a term) on the Payload Functional startup.

To all supporting the 05:00 launch day proc - systems requests that you be on station in overflow at 05:00.

We are closer o chamber pump down then we have ever been!

As of 5:00 PM today, we are running the Mini-RF experiment checkout, which will run for another hour. At approx. 6:00 PM, we can start the GDS software tests which will run for at least 4 hours. Following the GDS test, we can start the LOLA functional tests (no earlier than 10:00 PM). This puts us about an hour behind our schedule from this morning; meaning that we will probably start the pump down for the Thermal Cycle segment of the test, around 0600 tomorrow morning 11/14/2008.

Getting Closer to Pump Down #2

We are making progress through our list of activities. We have completed the LEND test without the source and the LROC collimator test. We are currently checking out the new RF switch box. At 1pm we will remove the LOLA CDA purge, install the LEND source and close the door. After door closure, we will run the LEND test and then the MRF tests.

We have a new RAID system and Warren Thompson is working on the installation. The plan is to install it between the MRF testing and the LOLA testing.

I think we are pretty close to the original plan. We may be off by an hour or so, but close.

Status 11/12 @5:45pm

Not the most productive day. We struggled through the GN&C FSW Functional because we had the safing enabled when last time we ran this, the safing was not enabled. We've decided to have Bruce rewrite his procs to take the safing into account and verify them on FlatSat. We will find another time to run this test after the procs have been modified.

For the rest of the evening, we will run the FSW Stress Test and then run Trending.

Tomorrow morning, we will resume with the schedule outlined earlier today.

Status 11/12 @10:30am

Yesterday we completed the FSW load and the C&DH FSW Functional. We also dumped the ST1 EEPROM and uploaded a correction to the two corrupted words. ST1 was rebooted and it seems to be operating nominally now. Hurray!

Today we have installed an ITOS patch to correct some bugs and allows everyone to monitor GDS telemetry. Currently, we are running the GN&C FSW functional. After that, the plan is to run the FSW Stress test and then orbiter trending. We think this will take the rest of the day.

LEND functional - no source. (8a-11a)
LROC Collimator Test. (11a-3p)
Install LEND radiation source. (3p-3:30p)

Between the tests

Yesterday (Monday) the ST#1 EEPROM was dumped. RF cables were calibrated and installed.

So far today: The SAS harness is installed to the test fixture (playhouse). We powered up and loaded FSW version 4.3.3. We are currently running the C&DH FSW functional.

The plan for the rest of today:
continue C&DH FSW functional
start GN&C FSW functional
at 7:30PM (done or not) we will dump the ST#1 EEPROM (third time) to verify findings.
at 2:00AM we will (in conjunction with Galileo) review the dump and may reload the EEPROM.

We have completed the following: Installation of the LVA cold ring,
installation of the Star Tracker Stimulus with heaters and thermocouples, installation LOLA shower head with heaters and thermocouples, but without the fiber optic cables; they will be installed on Monday, additional thermocouples were installed on the propulsion system cat bed heaters.
At this point we are still working on modifications to the Solar Array Gimbal thermal hardware; we are removing some blankets, installing Kapton tape on the harness and adding some heaters to the gimbal assembly. This activity will consume the remainder of the day. Other blanket work is going on in parallel to this task.
There is no work scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday 11/9/2008; we will resume chamber break activities on Monday morning, 11/9/2008.

Status 11/8 @9:30am

Completed the installation of the LVA cold ring. Currently we are installing the blanket over the test connector panels, TCs to the catbed heaters and the Star Tracker OGSE.

The SAS power harness has been secured to the enclosure by Brian.

Other things on the docket today include installing the LOLA GSE and opening up the blanket on the SAS gimbal and installing TCs.

Status 11/7 @10:30pm

We have completed the installation of the test harnesses, including the RF cables and the battery GSE rack.

Start of the LVA cold ring installation is 7am Saturday morning.

Status 11/7 @ 8:30pm

So far we have managed to open the chamber door, perform the radiation test, remove the radiation source, remove the enclosure panels, install the catwalks, certify the battery GSE rack, open blankets around the LVA and test connector panel; and install some of the thruster covers.

Still need to remove the test connector panel cover, test the pyro valve NSIs, safe to mate the battery GSE interface and install the test connectors.

Plan for Saturday.
